Species Info

Origin:
Peafowl are native to India, Burma, Java, Ceylon, Malaya and Congo.

Habitat:

In the wild, they live in deciduous tropical rainforests.

Anatomy:
The male peafowl (Peacock) is about 84 inches (2.1 m) long. The female (Peahen) is about 34 inches (0.85 m) long. Both have a fan-shaped crest on the head. Only the peacock has a long, brilliantly-coloured train of feathers that grow from its shimmering blue back. He can raise the train of feathers, forming a stunning display.

Wild Diet: Seeds, Fruit, Plant material, and small animals including mice and insects.

Captive Diet: Dried Catfood, Mixed Corn or Pheasant Mix, Layers Pellet and Chopped Fruit & Vegetables

Peafowl Facts

  • Peafowl are very hardy birds and with proper care, can live as long as fourty to fifty years.
  • Peafowl come in a wide variety of colours including blue, green, white, light brown, and purple. These colours and many other which are not mentioned have come from selective breeding by people all over the world. The India blue and Java green peafowl are the two most common colours of peafowl found in the wild. In captivity the India blue peafowl is by far the most common and is often the species seen at most zoos and parks.
  • A group of peafowl is called a Muster.
